Click here to see more news from this city

KARACHI - Kidnapping for ransom of minor children in the northern parts of Sindh notorious for crimes, particularly Kandhkot in Kashmore district, is

KARACHI - Kidnapping for ransom of minor children in the northern parts of Sindh notorious for crimes, particularly Kandhkot in Kashmore district, is becoming a lucrative business.

This was revealed in a detailed research study conducted by Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) National Manager Salam Dharejo.

He informed that the majority of children kidnapped in the area were Hindus – the biggest religious minority of Pakistan. The three-year (2008-2010) study states that between January 2008 to December 2010, at least 23 minor children – some even aged three – were kidnapped for ransom and out of them 9 were Hindus including four girls. The majority of children kidnapped were aged between three to 12 years. These cases could be much more than actually reported, as the kidnappers threaten the parents of killing the child, if they approach the police.

During the last year, around 12 cases of child kidnapping were registered with six of them belonging to Hindu families.
“Due to consistent kidnapping incidents, the families are under perpetual fear and insecurity while many Hindu families have migrated to India. The parents are compelled to stop sending minors to school and even do not allow them to go out of the home in Kashmore and Kandhkot towns,” Dharejo said.

When asked why he selected the particular areas for his research, he said that keeping in view the particular focus on kidnapping of Hindu children, the analysis was carried out in the district to understand the nature and prevalence of kidnappings, and to analyse the role of police with reference to child protection.

Most of the kidnapped children were recovered within a week to two months. In most cases the parents had to pay huge sums of money as ransom with the police playing the role of middle-men in negotiations with criminals.

The district police record shows that in every case, the police arrested one to 10 persons. All kidnappings cases were proceeded at anti-terrorism courts but not a single offender has been convicted since 2008 due to lack of evidence.

For the last many years, child kidnapping for ransom cases in Kandhkot at Kashmore district have created an environment of insecurity. Around 90 percent of the total Hindus population of 2.7 million lives in Sindh. The northern parts of Sindh comprise large Hindu population involved in business, which appeals to the criminals for targeting them. Although kidnapping adult Hindu females for forced conversation is not new, kidnapping of minor children has become an emerging industry in the province.

“The Hindu community is particularly targeted because of their vulnerable socio-political status. Having no political patronage and relationship with the criminal mafia and business backgrounds, they are comparatively easy to exploit. Even after the recovery of abducted children, they do not go for litigation in fear of hostility and in almost all cases, the culprits were set free due to absence of witnesses,” explained Dharejo.

India should resume composite dialogue with Pakistan: Gilani

India should resume composite dialogue with Pakistan: Gilani
‘Need To Resolve All Issues Peacefully’

Islamabad, Jan 9: Pakistan is hopeful that India will respond positively to its “sincere” efforts for resumption of meaningful dialogue during the upcoming meeting of the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Sunday.
Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with visiting German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including the regional situation and India-Pakistan relations.
Gilani told the German Foreign Minister that Pakistan believed its relations with India “should not be made hostage to one terror incident and India should resume the composite dialogue with Pakistan to resolve all outstanding issues, including the Kashmir dispute, with Pakistan peacefully and expeditiously”.
Referring to the forthcoming meeting between the Foreign Secretaries on the sidelines of a SAARC meet in Bhutan next month and a proposed visit by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister to India, Gilani said he hoped that India would respond positively and constructively during these parleys to “his government’s sincere efforts for resumption of meaningful dialogue.”
The two Foreign Secretaries will meet for the first time since September last year to explore ways to take forward the bilateral peace process that has been stalled since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which India blamed on the Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba.
Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said yesterday that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi would “definitely” visit India if the Foreign Secretaries succeed in evolving a “comprehensive agenda for the resumption of the composite dialogue”.
Qureshi, who was invited to New Delhi by his Indian counterpart S M Krishna in July last year, too has said he will go ahead with the visit only if it results in “substantial, meaningful and result-oriented talks”.
The visit was originally scheduled for November last year but was put off several times due to the ongoing chill in bilateral ties.
India suspended the composite dialogue in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008.
Since then, India has linked the resumption of the peace process to Pakistan taking action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks and “dismantling terrorist infrastructure based on its soil.”
Pakistan has been insisting on a roadmap for future engagements on issues like the Kashmir dispute, the military stand-off on the Siachen glacier and differences on the sharing of river waters. India has indicated it favours a phased approach, with terrorism being among the top priorities.

Heart ailments on rise i

Heart ailments on rise i
Srinagar, Jan 9: The political unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the past two decades, is taking a heavy toll on the health of people, with heart ailments increasing at a fast pace, experts said Sunday.
They said the heart ailments have also hit many officers and constables of the Jammu and Kashmir Police who have been at the forefront of maintaining law and order in the Valley.
“The political uncertainty and the law and order situation in the Valley have led to marked increase in the heart ailments including attacks among the people. About 10 percent of Kashmir’s population, below and above 30 years, is suffering with various heart ailments. How many times you must have seen your friends or relatives dying due to heart attack at the age of 25-30 in the Valley as compared to 60 in the West? This is an alarming trend,” said prominent cardiologist Prof (Dr) Upendra Kaul during the launching of life saving procedure Angioplasty in Khyber Medical Institute here.
The initiative has been taken in collaboration with New Delhi based prestigious Fortis Escorts Heart Institute of which Dr Kaul is the Executive Director and Dean Cardiology.
Elaborating, Dr Kaul said high level of stress has emerged as one of the high risk factors for heart ailments in Kashmir. “People of the Valley have been reeling under immense stress. The law and order situation has been compelling them to reach home before evening; parents are worried about safety of their wards and wait for their safe return from work places. The children are scared. Sometimes people can’t even do exercise not to talk of venturing out for a walk due to strikes, curfews or stone pelting. This has contributed to rise in stress, diabetes and blood pressure levels which subsequently trigger heart ailments and attacks, which in most of the cases are life-consuming,” Kaul said.
Dr Kaul said the cops of J&K police are also not immune to heart diseases. “Many police officers and constables have developed heart ailments in the past few years due to high levels of stress as compared to past 30 years,” he said.
He said over 30 to 40 thousand people in the Valley need Angioplasty annually. “The hospitals here including the SKIMS and those associated with GMC don’t have the manpower and infrastructure to cater to such a large number of Angioplasty procedures. The facilities there are grossly inadequate. Besides in Government set-up, the endeavors often get entangled due to bureaucracy and politics. On one hand we need to help these institutions and on the other train the medicos here to conduct the life-saving procedures for catering to the heart patients,” he said.
Dr Kaul maintained that time factor is important in saving the patients with heart ailments. “You may have money but if you don’t get the treatment in time, there is no fun in having it. People with heart attacks need immediate treatment in two hours before the artery which is to be opened by Angioplasty dies. There is dire need to establish cathlabs and heart centers in every district. Time is ripe for a common exchange between the government and private hospitals to save the lives of patients. Health competition is good but not at the cost of patients,” he said.
For effective and timely treatment of patients, Dr Kaul said Angioplasty has been launched at the Khyber Medical Institute. “Today is a heartening day for me that I have finally succeeded to start the Angioplasty program for the first time in the State in a private hospital. We have done seven procedures out of which five were of Angioplasty. The patients at Khyber Medical Institute are recovering fast. But I had to do lot of groundwork for the procedure. My dedicated team of cardiologists did initial assessment of the infrastructure and identified the patients for the procedure,” he said.
However, Dr Kaul maintained that he does not intend to take the patients outside the Valley for treatment. “Some senior cardiologists in Kahsmir have been running a rumour mill that I have come to Kashmir for luring patients to hospitals in other states. But I want to clarify that as son of this soil, my objective is to provide treatment at affordable rates to the people of my homeland at their doorsteps,” he said.
He said the endeavor was not possible without the support of Khurshid Tramboo and Dr M Hussain Wani of Khyber Medical Institute.
He minced no words in praising the doctors and paramedical staff of the Valley. “They are dedicated, inferior to none and many of them have made it to the prestigious medical institutes of India. Many of them have been trained in conducting life saving procedures and we will be happy to utilize their services. I will be helping the SKIMS, GMC and other private hospitals to conduct life saving heart procedures,” he said.
On the occasion, M Hussain Wani Administrator of Khyber Medical Institute said it is the endeavor of the hospital’s promoters to provide better healthcare to the people of the Valley. “Angioplasty is a costly affair even if it is done in SKIMS as the patients have to purchase the consumables from market and the whole procedure costs over Rs 1.50 lakhs. In our hospital the patients have the option to do Angioplasty at nearly Rs one lakh inclusive of consumables, operation and room charges,” he said.
Dr Wani made a comprehensive presentation about the Khyber Medical Institute. “A dream started to take shape in 2002 when our promoters late Dr Ghulam Rasool Tramboo and Muhammad Maqbool Tramboo envisaged to venture into the healthcare and started this institute to carry forward the mission of delivering quality healthcare to the people. With the passage of time, the institute has become a super specialty hospital with unique facilities in cardiology and Gastroenterology. We are committed to contribute and work towards effective delivery of health care to the patients’ satisfaction,” Dr Wani added.

Katrina Kaif And Imran Khan On Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Sets

It was PICNIC time on the sets of DIL SE DIYA…VACHAN

Gaurav Khanna (Prem)and Neena Gupta (Dr. Kalyani) along with Vandana Joshi (Nandini ) from Zee TV’s Dil Se Diya …Vachan were missing their Dilli ki sardi and decided to make the most of the sudden dip in temperature in amchi Mumbai. Filmcity, where the show’s sets are located, is a vast expanse of small hilltops covered in a thick canopy of trees and the weather in the mornings is very chilly with a hint of floating mist which adds on to the romantic appeal of the place. In such weather, the demand for savouries and snacks also is the most discussed topic on the sets.

To make the most of this wonderful weather, one day Neena Ji decided to get a toaster from her home and Gaurav Khanna arranged for a barbecue stand. Soon the aromas of crisp toast laden with butter & jam, paneer and chicken tikka wafted in the air while masala chai brewed in the pot nearby. People on the sets had a blast with the sun on their back, hot snacks on their plate and the refreshing chill into beat the usual humid Mumbai air.

Gaurav Khanna says, “ The weather in Mumbai this year is simply mindblowing. I always used to miss the biting cold, wearing colorful cardigans and mufflers, eating hot piping savouries and most importantly the weekend outdoor picnics after moving to Mumbai. It was Neena ji’s idea to do this picnic….and trust me it brought back so many wonderful memories …!” A team that bonds together is a rarity nowadays truly in this cut-throat industry! Way to go Team Dil Se Diya…Vachan!

PM, Karunanidhi deny rift in Congress-DMK ties

DMK chief and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday asserted that ties between the two alliance partners were as strong as ever. They scoffed at speculations that the 2G spectrum scam probe and raids had brought in strains into the related stories
Karunanidhi meets Prime Minister amid reports of rift

alliance.

The Prime Minister said that the alliance remained strong as ever.

He also told the media that the Karunanidhi had apprised him of the damage caused by the heavy rain that flooded several regions of the state and sought higher compensation for the farmers and villagers who suffered losses.

Karunanidhi called on the Prime Minister in the morning at the Raj Bhawan.

The chief minister also asserted that the relations were strong.

"They are as strong as between you (media) and me", Karunanidhi said perhaps in a jest as he had been maintaining that there was no problem between the alliance partners but it was a section of the media that was working itself up to see a snap in the ties.

It was Karunanidhi's first meeting with the Prime Minister after the probe into 2G spectrum scam by the CBI gathered pace and led to raids on former union telecom minister A Raja and people close to him in the DMK.

Tamil Maiyyam, a NGO in which Karunanidhi's daughter and Rajya Sabha MP M Kanomozhi is a director, was also raided.

The DMK launched campaign in support of Raja across the state.

The chief minister's unhappiness was evident in what is being seen as a snub after he did not receive Singh at the airport or call on him after his arrival on Sunday evening.

Karunanidhi, instead, chose to attend a book release function and cited this as a reason for not visiting the Prime Minister.

The chief minister maintained that he had prior engagement and denied his decision had anything to do with the postponement of the Adyar Poonga inaugural.

It could not be inaugurated as the project failed to get the mandatory environmental clearance from the union government on time.

DMK leaders, including Karunanidhi and Raja, have maintained that the raids or investigations were routine in nature and that Raja would emerge clean as he is innocent and had done no wrong

500 militants active in J&K: Police chief

Pointing out that terror infrastructure is intact across the border to aid and abet terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir, police chief Kuldeep Khoda today maintained that 450-500 militants are active in the state where militancy has been lowest in past two decades but infiltration bids had increased.

The terror infrastructure across the border - launching pads and terrorists training camps - are intact and active to aid, abet and infiltrate militants into the state, Khoda told reporters.

"The camps and launching pads have not been closed down. The infiltration bids from across the border have increased while infiltration of militants is down because of the alertness and vigilance of army personnel who have killed more militants during the bids last year," he said.

However, there are 450-500 militants actively operating in the state and 45-50% of them are foreign militants, he said.

Referring to militancy in the state, he said the situation is under control and incidents are lowest in over two decades.

There are 488 militancy-related incidents in 2010 against 499 in 2009, 20 militants have surrendered in 2010 compared to 15 in 2009, he said adding lowest 47 civilians were killed in terrorists incidents in 2010 compared to 71 in 2009. Not only this, 69 security forces and police personnel were killed last year as against 79 in 2009.

“The interest and stakes of one-and-a-half billion people could not be held hostage to the routine political development within the democratic structure of the two countries,” he added.

am not safe in this country: Binayak Sen's wife

New Delhi, January 03, 2011

Jailed rights activist Binayak Sen's wife on Monday said it appeared that the only recourse left to her is to seek political asylum in some "liberal" democratic country as she felt that her family is not safe in her own country. Addressing a press meet in New Delhi, academician Ilina Sen related stories
Binayak Sen, 2 others get life term for sedition
Guilty before proven guilty
alleged that the judgement convicting her husband on charges of sedition appeared to be to stem dissent in the bud.

"After the verdict, they are targeting me. I am concerned about my two daughters aged 25 years and 20 years. I am really worried about them."

"If the state government does not allow Sen to be freed, I will only get his dead body as life imprisonment means that he will be in jail till his end of life. I need to stay out. I would like to live my life fully...We have gone through colossal agony," Ilina said.

Sen, Naxal ideologue Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata businessman Piyush Guha were sentenced to life imprisonment in December by a court in Raipur for sedition and colluding with Maoists to establish a network to fight the State.

Sen, 58, a paediatrician by training and vice-president of People's Union of Civil Liberties, had been accused of acting as courier for Sanyal, who was in jail, by carrying his messages and letters to the underground Maoists.

"Entirely the whole thing is manufactured somewhere else. I may be guilty of contempt of court. Please take me in. Only recourse that seems to be available is to walk into some embassy of liberal democracy and ask for political asylum. I am not safe in this country," an emotional Ilina said.

Noting that the judgement has come as a "complete shock", she claimed "during trial many people asked us to approach court seeking transfer of trial from the state. We believed that a fair trial was possible. The faith has been shattered."

Countering allegations raised by prosecution that she was an ISI agent, she said, "I have friends with Muslim names (like) Ali Asghar, Saifullah Choudhury. I and Binayak have friends who have Muslim names and I am proud of that. But somehow it seems that it is illegal to have friends with Muslim names in this country."

Ilina said the court did not take into account several points raised by the defence, including the testimony of jailors who said that the meetings Sen had with Sanyal were supervised. She also claimed that the prosecution could not establish that Sen and Guha had met.

Hindu and terrorism are contradictory words: RSS chief

PUNE: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has strongly criticised the tendencies among the Congress-led dispensation at the centre for targeting the Sangh by associating it with terrorism to divert public attention from corruption and scams.

"Those ruling the country find it convenient to make a scapegoat out of the RSS when they are themselves unable to deal with a situation of their own making," Bhagwat said at the concluding ceremony of the fifth Vishwa Sangh Shivir 2010 a grand conclave that is organised after every five years by the Sangh's international arm, the Hind Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) at Balewadi here on Sunday.

The HSS has a network of 750 shakhas' (branches) in 35 countries including the US, UK, France and the Scandinavian countries. Over 517 HSS activists from these countries participated in the five-day international conclave, which focused on Hinduism, the Sangh and its social work, the youth and promotion of cultural studies, among other issues.

Bhagwat also called upon Hindus in India to organise themselves in a way that they are viewed as model citizens by Hindus settled abroad. "Unless the Hindus in India are respected, how can we expect the Hindus across the world to be respected?" he asked.

According to Bhagwat, "A Hindu can never harm any person from another religion. Even the most illiterate of Hindus knows this, because it is ingrained in his/her culture. Unfortunately, we have to keep reminding this, off late, because of the selfish strategies of leaders from our own country to paint the Hindus in a bad picture in an attempt to stick to power."

He said, "Hindu and terrorism are two contradictory words. Even people in Pakistan haven't dared so far to make any reference about Hindu Terrorism', but leaders in our own country are coining new terms every other moment, talking about saffron terrorism' and more recently majority terrorism'. Why bring a bad name to our own people?"

Bhagwat said, "Equating a couple of incidents here and there with the sort of activities normally associated with terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and involving the Sangh's name has become a convenient ruse. Whereas, the fact remains that the ruling alliance fears the growing mass base of the values promoted by the Sangh. Every time, they see a threat to their power, the RSS bogey is raised."

"Martyrs are being humiliated in our own country and our own leaders are bent on reducing India's stature internationally," said Bhagwat. "It is often the case that the evil person always desires to test the tolerance of the good human being, unmindful of the fact that there will be consequences at some point of time," he said.

Earlier, industrialist Abhay Firodia, who presided over the ceremony, spoke about the need for people to build apt pressure against corruption and scams and seek greater transparency in public life.

Shankarrao Tatwavadi, who heads the HSS international activities, provided an overview about the HSS work. Senior Sangh leaders including Madan Das Devi, former RSS chief K S Sudarshan, Rashtriya Sevika Samiti head Pramiltai Medhe, Bajranglal Gupta, RSS Pune city chief Mohan Ghaisas were among those present.

We, not India, killed 'our own people': Hurriyat leader

SRINAGAR: A senior Hurriyat leader has created a flutter by saying that two separatist leaders and his brother were killed by "our own people" and not security agencies, prompting J&K government to term it as a "late admission" and a call for a probe to fix responsibility.

"No police was involved (in the killings).... It was our own people who killed them," former Hurriyat Conference chairman Abdul Gani Bhat said.

He said time had come to speak the truth about the killers of Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone, who were shot dead in 2002, and his own brother Mohammad Sultan Bhat, who was murdered in 1995.

Asked to identify the killers, Bhat said, "What is the need to identify them.... they are already identified."

Farooq, father of the present chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was shot dead at his residence on May 21, 1990 while Lone, father of Hurriyat executive member Bilal Lone, was gunned down during a commemorative rally for the senior Mirwaiz on the same day in 2002.

The separatist leaders had earlier blamed the security forces for the killings.

Bhat said that his brother Mohammad Sultan Bhat also fell to the bullets of those espousing the separatist cause.

"I had said this then and I am saying it now. There is no ambiguity or confusion in my mind," he said.

Other moderate Hurriyat leaders chose to maintain a studied silence on Bhat's remarks.

The state government has held that then Hizbul Mujahideen commander Mohammad Abdullah Bangroo had killed Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq while a commander of Al-Umar Mujahideen had shot dead senior Lone.

Hizbul Mujahideen is considered to be ideologically inclined towards hardline Hurriyat faction leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani while Al Umar is believed to be the militant-wing of Awami Action Committee headed by the Mirwaiz.

Geelani refused to comment on the statements made by the former Chairman of the undivided Hurriyat Conference.

"I have nothing to say about their remarks," Geelani said.

CPM state secretary M Y Tarigami said Bhat's statement was "revealing" and the incidents need credible investigation.

"A credible investigation should be carried out so that responsibility for the killings is fixed," Tarigami said.

Sajjad Gani Lone, the youngest son of the slain leader, had blamed Geelani for the killing but retracted his statement few years later.

Jammu and Kashmir's DGP Kuldeep Khoda said that "the person involved in the killing of Mirwaiz Farooq is also buried in the same 'martyrs' graveyard' where the senior Mirwaiz was laid to rest".

BJP demands fresh probe into Bofors kickbacks

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded a special investigation team to probe the payment of kickbacks to Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi and Dubai-based businessman Win Chadha in the Bofors gun deal. The party raised the demand after the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal nailed related stories
Quattrocchi got kickbacks: tribunal restarts Bofors row
Quattrocchi and Chadha in the Bofors scandal.

The tribunal said kickbacks were paid to Quattrocchi and Chadha, who died a decade ago, in the nearly Rs.1,500 crore Bofors deal concluded by the then Congress-led government.

"It was a fraud. After this (tribunal) order, you need to reopen the criminal matter and the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) surely can't be trusted with it. There is no better case to have a SIT (special investigation team) to reinvestigate this matter, which was closed because of fraud," BJP leader Arun Jaitley said.

"How can this country have a situation where the criminal investigative agency says there are no kickbacks. And the highest revenue agency says taxes are payable on these kickbacks," he said.

"They didn't file appeals against unlawful orders, they got the accounts defrozen. This was not merely a case of bribery. It is now established by this judicial order. Bribery was accompanied by a huge cover up operation which has almost lasted two and half decades," he said.

"Nobody has still answered the question which this order raises - in 1986 why was Quattrocchi paid this money," he said.

Jaitley also attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying his offer to appear before parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in connection with the 2G spectrum scandal was not enough.

"This so-called innocent offer to appear before the PAC is not the answer to corruption. If his offer has not convinced his number two in the government, it surely can't convince the opposition or the nation," he said, referring to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's remarks that the prime minister should not have offered to appear before the PAC.

"Ironically, for Sonia Gandhi, this is a timely reminder that this country does not need five points to fight corruption.

"You only need one point to fight corruption - start sending those guilty of corruption to jail and don't cover up," he added.

Justice Balakrishnan should quit chair of NHRC: SDPI

Bhopal, December 31 (Pervez Bari): Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), national president E. Abubacker has stated that Justice K. G. Balakrishnan does not have the moral right to continue in the chair of National Human Right Commission, (NHRC). He must resign and face investigations in the event of allegations raised against his relatives, that they have illegally amassed properties when he was the Chief Justice of India.
In a Press release Mr. Abubacker pointed out that it is not only Justice Balakrishnan's son-in-law Shreenijan who is facing allegation, but his wife, brother and daughter also are under the shadow of doubt. It is not the political influence of Shreenijan that helped him to gain assets. It has now become evident that Justice Balakrishnan, while he was the Chief Justice of India, had deliberately ignored the complaint against A. Raja, former minister and the prime accused of the biggest corruption scam in the history of the country, he added.
The release said that it is worth mentioning that Justice Balakrishnan had earlier played down a similar allegation against Justice P.D. Dinakaran and did all that was possible to have him elevated in the Supreme Court.
It was Justice Balakrishnan who instructed the Supreme Court registrar to litigate in the Delhi High Court against the order of the Chief Information Commissioner that the information whether judges have filed their statement of assets is to be disclosed under right to information act.
Justice Balakrishnan already made it clear that he is not competent to hold the post of NHRC Chairman, by sharing dais with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, day after the latter appeared before the special investigation team, formed under the direction of the Supreme Court to probe in to 2002 Gujarat genocide. The relatives of the victims had vehemently responded against the act. Again, he created anguish among the victimized group of people and in human rights circles, when he spoke in favour of fake encounter killings by police, occupying the chair of National Human Right Commission, the release stated. Justice Balakrishnan has also been the one who took initiatives for the Indian Judiciary to interact with the Israel counterpart, and signed a contract to strengthen the bilateral relationship.
Mr. Abubacker urged the Government to take steps to expel him if he is not ready to quit the post by himself. (pervezbari@eth.net)

SDPI Calls Sen s Conviction Outrageous; Sedition Laws Suited British

Bhopal, January 01 (Pervez Bari): The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), has vehemently condemned the conviction of rights activist Binayak Sen, who has been sentenced by a Raipur court to life imprisonment for sedition recently.
SDPI national General Secretary A. Sayeed in a statement said that the judgment is outrageous as it is based on weak evidence and it has made a travesty of justice. It appears that the fundamental right of freedom of expression has been held equal as terrorism. Carrying letters and handing it over to somebody else is not a strong ground to convict someone, he argued.
The statement said Sen is absolutely innocent and worked for the betterment of poor people in Chhattishgarh for which he was given the globally recognized Jonathan Mann award. A situation has been created where definition of anti-national and doing something for the greater common good are completely conflicted and corrupted. Those who resort to armed struggle have of course to be dealt with, but giving a life sentence to someone for carrying letters is morally unacceptable, the statement added.
Sedition laws suited the British government's attempts to weaken and demoralize the Indian struggle for freedom. Such laws should have no place in a free and democratic country. A democratically elected government should feel more secure and less threatened by dissent or by populist struggles, the statement pointed out.
Sayeed said it is heartening to note that prominent lawyer Ram Jethmalani has offered to defend Sen in higher judiciary if he (Sen) seeks his professional assistance. His reported stand that he did not find it contradictory to fight the case and be a BJP MP should be welcomed. Jethmalani also reportedly said: "I do not believe in party line. No party line says that lawyers should not appear for some people".
Sayeed hoped that the wrong done to Sen would be undone when the higher judiciary takes up the case on appeal. The higher courts would see reasons and declare the lower court decision as null and void and set Sen free from confinement at the
